FinDev Canada commits up to USD 40 million to Robust International Pte. Ltd. to support economic development in Sub-Saharan Africa

Press Release

The Honourable Randeep Sarai, Secretary of State (International Development), announced a USD 40 million loan on behalf of Canada’s bilateral development finance institution, FinDev Canada, to Robust International Pte. Ltd. ("Robust”), a vertically-integrated agribusiness company based in Singapore, and specializing in sesame, cashew, and soybean. The financing aims to strengthen agricultural supply chains in Least Developed Countries (LDCs) in Africa.

Expected Development Impact

MARKET DEVELOPMENT

  • Increase the procurement volume of agricultural commodities from LDCs for global export: Agricultural markets in Sub-Saharan Africa remain fragmented and informal, limiting smallholder farmers’ access to reliable buyers and formal value chains.  Robust helps to address these challenges by expanding local procurement, rural storage and processing capacity across its LDC operations. Through its traceability system, Robust supports farmers in meeting international quality and traceability standards, enabling consistent buyer purchases and stronger integration into higher-value export markets.
  • Strengthen the participation and incomes of rural farmers and aggregators: Robust strengthens farmer-to-market linkages by expanding its rural procurement network and providing training on quality standards and supply chain requirements. This is expected to increase market access and integration for rural farmers over the medium term, contributing to improved and more stable incomes across its LDC sourcing regions.

GENDER EQUALITY

  • Enhance the participation of women suppliers in Robust’s agricultural supply chains: Robust advances gender equality through explicit supply-chain commitments and targeted capacity-building for women farmers and aggregators in its LDC sourcing regions. This transaction strengthens those efforts by supporting expanded outreach and procurement from women suppliers.
  • 2X Qualification: This transaction is 2X-qualified under the 2X Employment criterion, with women representing 58% of Robust’s workforce, and under the 2X Supply Chain criterion, through a commitment to increase women’s participation in Robust’s sourcing operations in LDCs.

CLIMATE AND NATURE ACTION

  • Strengthen the adoption of climate-resilient agricultural practices: Rising temperatures and rainfall variability are increasing drought and flood risks, affecting 65% of agricultural land in Sub-Saharan Africa.  Through extension programs, Robust promotes climatesmart agricultural practices, including erosion control, water conservation, drought-tolerant crops, soil regeneration, and sustainable land use. These practices help farmers reduce post-harvest losses by improving crop handling, drying, and storage at the farm level.
